About Roger Bray: A Self-Published Author’s Journey Through Life and Writing

Writing in Retirement and Personal Passion

Writing has always been a passion of mine—a way to breathe life into characters and immerse myself in their journeys. I find myself living through their fears, triumphs, and everyday challenges.

My writing process is an endless series of questions: What would they do? How would they react? Is this true to their character? It may sound strange, but I can’t leave my characters in limbo; they deserve an ending, no matter where the story takes them.

A Life of Diverse Experiences

My own life, filled with unique experiences, drives me to seek justice in my stories. I see my characters as ordinary people thrust into extraordinary situations—situations that, with a twist of fate, could happen to any of us.

Like many senior writers, I draw from my personal journey. My time in the Navy, battles fought, and years as a police officer shaped the stories I tell. But it was an unexpected turn during my police career that truly ignited my passion for writing.

Overcoming Obstacles and Reigniting Creativity
After being medically retired due to a serious injury sustained while protecting a woman in a domestic violence situation, I faced challenges like depression and rejection. But as they say, when one door closes, another opens. This chapter of my life brought me back to learning, where I earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees—not for a career, but for personal growth. This journey reignited my passion for writing, a spark I hadn’t felt since high school.

Self-Published and Proud: My Writing Journey

Now, with three books published and more on the way, my passion for writing in retirement continues to evolve. Where this path will lead, I can’t say, but I’m eager to see. If my writing can bring even a small bit of joy to others, especially those starting to write later in life, I’ll consider it a success.

A Few Personal Notes
I’m happily married with three grown children, a granddaughter, and a grandson. My wife of 30 years shares our home with two cats—one adorably stubborn and another left behind at a cattery.
