Derek Borne

[dropcap]D[/dropcap]erek lives in Paris, Canada with his wife and moody bearded dragon Ziggy. When he isn’t writing superhero spy novels, he’s belting out Phantom of the Opera, playing his guitar, and watching Marvel superhero movies and TV shows, playing hockey, and making movie references daily.

Could you tell us about yourself?

My name is Derek Borne, I’m a Canadian Author. When I’m not writing, I’m spending time with my wife and bearded dragon (make sure I put the ‘bearded’ part in the right spot, or my wife will get me), usually eating something, singing, watching hockey and movie referencing daily.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing since a young age, but I originally wrote the first draft of “The Ultimate Agent” when I was 14, and kept up with it as a hobby over the years.

Tell us about one of, or your most recent book?

The Ultimate Agent” is available now, which is a superhero/spy novel. Reviewers are calling it “James Bond meets Avengers”, and I can’t complain at all.
It’s a story where a secret organization which employs the world’s best spies can give their agents superpowers. The reason, a Russian terrorist group can do the same. It becomes an arms race of sorts for superpowers and abilities. But there are questions along the way. Should you have powers? How many superpowers can the human body handle?

What do you love about writing?

I love being able to let my imagination fly. There’s nothing better than coming home, and letting the words flow from your heart and mind to the page. It’s therapy. And to be able to give someone a reading experience that they enjoy is so humbling.

How do you get inspired/ where do you get your ideas?

Superheroes are everywhere these days. Admittedly, it was somewhat difficult trying to find a new angle to the genre, but I people are responding to it quite well.

I’m always looking for ways to add aspects that haven’t been done yet. It’s all about pushing the limits, and seeing where they take you.

Do you have a specific writing process?

I’m a pantser. Plain and simple. I’ve always got my endgame, but I like to surprise myself when I’m writing, because I feel like if I don’t get surprised, then the readers won’t be either.

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?

Other than the writing part, make connections. The more people you get to know (and actually talk to them for the sake of talking, not just for needing something), the more your fanbase will grow.

What are you currently working on? How long before release?

UA2 is currently getting the rewrite. And I’ll tell ya, these superhero spies can’t wait to save the day again. Hopefully it will be ready for release early next year-ish.

What are you currently reading?

Rebel’s Blade by Frost Kay. It’s a fantastic medieval read!

Who are your favourite authors?

Michael Crichton has always been and always will be my all-time favorite author. As of recently, Sarah Noffke, Molly Phipps, and Frost Kay are also favorites.

Do you have any favourite fictional characters?

Anyone in the Marvel comics. DC can go fly a Superman kite.

Any fun facts about you that you would like to share?

When I’m not writing, I’m usually singing, selling olive oil and balsamic, playing/watching hockey, and movie referencing almost all the time… okay, yes, all the time.
